Realistic and Simple Self-Care Tips for a Happier You

September is National Self-Care Awareness Month. While self-care has become almost synonymous with bath bombs, retail therapy, and face masks, they don’t encapsulate what it means to take care of yourself. For some people, self-care is about getting through their to-do list, finally starting a new hobby or catching up with a friend. Sometimes, self-care is about taking time to do things that we want to do. Since it is the month to think about mindfulness and kindness, we’ve come up with a few no-frills rituals that can help you to practice self-care.

Focus on the breath. Taking long, slow deep breaths through your belly and trying to disengage your mind is a great way to calm your nervous system down. It’s a way to pay homage to sensations that you are accustomed to ignoring as you move throughout your busy day. Set a reminder on your phone every few hours to remind you to take a few deep breaths and restore your focus.

Eat healthily and mindfully. Too often we eat out meals while multitasking, meaning that we forget what we’re eating and how. For once, eat your meal at a table with no TV, computer, or phone around you. Eliminate distractions so that you can focus on what you’re eating.

Express gratitude. Just as it’s beneficial to keep track of what we’ve done, it’s also good to notice what we have. Keep a notebook by your bed and note things down that you’re lucky to have. Everything from clean sheets to a good friend is worth noting.

Move. Exercise increases your endorphins, helping you to feel happier and less stressed. Find an activity that you love to do, whether it is hitting the gym, hiking trails, or going to a yoga class, and commit to doing more of it.

Unplug. Social media certainly has its benefits – and its downsides. Most people report their success online, creating an unrealistic notion of a perfect life. Take time to break away from social media and allow yourself to focus on the beauty of the moment.
