Fight Climate Crisis by Making Small, Impactful Steps at Home
There’s no doubt that we’re in a climate crisis. Now, more than ever, people are looking for meaningful ways that they can help the planet. Everything from attending protests and participating in trash cleanup to voicing your concerns to your local community can be extremely productive. But for those who can’t get out there and be as active, there are still important steps you can take to benefit the planet.
Buy less
Buying less not only cuts down on plastic packaging that is clogging our oceans, but it also reduces your carbon footprint and puts fewer greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere. Clothing, in particular, offers a great opportunity to cut back. Fast fashion can be extremely damaging to our environment. Instead of buying new clothes, consider purchasing second-hand items. If you must purchase new, opt for sustainable and ethically-made items.
Reduce emissions
Make it a goal to use your car less whenever possible. Instead, opt for sustainable transport such as bicycling, walking, or using public transport. In the case of long-distance travel, trains are more sustainable than airplanes, which cause a great deal of CO2 to be emitted into the atmosphere.
Eat for change
You can make a huge impact by changing what you eat. The University of Oxford conducted the most comprehensive study exploring the relationship between farming and the environment. They found that 83 percent of land is dedicated to animal agriculture. If the world shifted to a vegan diet, we could reduce the amount of land we need for agriculture by 75 percent. They summarized by saying that a vegan diet is “the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth”. Fortunately, it’s never been easier, cheaper, or more delicious!
